Having a backyard party does not need to be a huge challenge. All it takes is three very necessary elements, and the host or hostess will end up with a gathering that everyone will want to repeat over and over again. These unique elements include:

Great Food Selections

Make it interesting. It does not have to be the same old picnic fare every time. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks are always welcome foods but change the selections up if these gatherings are held often. Some great new additions could include shrimp kabobs, beer-can chicken, or even tasty racks of ribs.

And those meals don't always have to be cooked or grilled varieties. Sometimes in hot weather, cold items can be the most refreshing. Purchase artisan breads including whole grain varieties, specialty buns, and hoagies to set up a sandwich station. Talk to a local business like Klosterman Baking Company to see what they have to offer and if they have any suggestions. Complete the display with a variety of sliced meats, an assortment of cheeses, condiments, and a tray of pickles, sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and sliced onions. Add potato salad, pasta salad, and/or coleslaw. Jazz the meal up with various grilled vegetables or a distinctive relish tray.

Desserts could be made up of fresh fruit kabobs, fruit cobblers, an array of cakes and pies, or just plain old chocolate chip cookies.

Refreshing Beverages

A water, lemonade, and tea station with cool slices of lemon and lime would be so refreshing for all attendees. Add adult drinks such as draft or bottled beer and wine coolers if so desired. Children would love a sweet fruit punch or even an assortment of sodas. There are so many great containers available now that would make this beverage area inviting and refreshing. Purchase an insulated ice bin or heavy duty cooler so ice is available throughout the event.

Ongoing Fun

Invest in some backyard toys that can be used for both adults and children. Some great choices could include lawn darts, volleyball sets, or beanbag games. If small children are involved, rent a moonwalk or inflatable jump house from time to time to keep them happy and occupied.

If a pool is on site, there are so many pool games that can be enjoyed by all. Soda or coin dives, belly flop contests, pool basketball, and even races can make the day competitive and exciting.

Using just these three elements, everyone will be sure to have a great time with family and friends. Change it up during the warm summer months and add different elements to be sure that all are occupied and engaged.
