The truth is, only a doctor who is authorized by the CDC, or Center for Disease Control and Prevention, can conduct the Green Card Medical. Such a doctor is also called a USCIS - approved Civil Surgeon or a panel physician. Unless a family doctor's name is there on this list an applicant cannot approach the family doctor for having the Immigration Medical conducted.

THE IMMIGRATION MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Once the applicant fixes up an appointment with the Civil Surgeon of his choice and preferably in his area it is advisable to reach the place of testing on time. A complete medical examination, consisting of a physical check-up, x-rays and vaccinations will be conducted by the panel physician. If there is no provision for the x-ray or vaccinations in the clinic the applicant will be referred to the appropriate medical laboratory or clinic for getting the same done.

WHO FINALIZES THE RESULTS OF THE MEDICAL EXAM?

The Green Card Medical doctor does not finalize the results of the medical exam or arrive at a conclusion once the complete medical examination is conducted. It is USCIS that makes the final decision pertaining to the medical. If there happens to be a difficulty in the results the Visa office will contact the applicant through written communication.

WHAT SHOULD BE CARRIED TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINATION?

The applicant must carry the following documents etc. to the exam:

• Some identification, in the form of the applicant's passport, national identity card or a driving license should be brought to the medical exam - in short, a document that bears the applicant's picture and signature should be carried along.

• Reports of previously conducted medical examinations or test results of previous examinations along with reports of any existing conditions should also be carried along.

WHAT IS EXAMINED DURING THE PHYSICAL EXAMINATION?

The physical examination includes an examination of the physical body - ears, eyes, nose, throat, internal organs such as the abdomen, lymph nodes, heart, lungs skin and external genitalia.

HOW WILL THE RESULTS OF THE MEDICAL EXAMINATION BE DISPENSED WITH?

The USCIS-approved Civil Surgeon will conduct all the tests and relevant physical examination checks. Vaccinations if any will also be conducted. The reports of all these are entered into a form called the I-693, which will be filled up by the surgeon and handed over in a sealed envelope to the applicant for onward forwarding to the USCIS officials. The visa will then be processed based on the reports of the Immigration Medical.
